At the ARC Forum last week in Orlando, many of the sessions and hallway conversations were focused on Cybersecurity and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). True, the IIoT is not necessarily a new topic. Based on my conversations, the industry is excited about the business value we can expect from IIoT. But the truth is, while the technology to take advantage of IIoT is available now, most organizations are still working through the transition and have not yet realized the benefits. Interesting times are ahead!
Cybersecurity in particular has especially dominated much of the conversations at the forum (and in the news lately). Vendors and end users alike sent a large contingent of people to the forum to learn about the subject. The question I am hearing is the same again and again:
With the variety of control systems and communication protocols that I have at my company, how can we expect to implement a comprehensive inventory and configuration management system like we have with our IT assets?
At PAS, we hear this question often. The proprietary nature of control system cyber assets makes collecting inventory and configuration data a manual effort. Is managing a heterogeneous environment your biggest challenge?
